Sending money from Kenya to China starts with one decision: which currency and exact amount must reach the supplier.

For a Kenyan importer, the invoice and verified bank instructions should settle that decision before a rate is compared. A CNY invoice needs a CNY calculation; a USD invoice needs a USD calculation.

At OnLink's CNY sell rate of KES 19.42 at 06:10 UTC on 1 September 2026, a CNY 100,000 invoice costs KES 1,942,000 before any separate transfer fee. Each KES 0.10 difference in the rate changes that bill by KES 10,000.

Start with the supplier's invoice currency

Read the currency code next to the amount on the invoice. CNY is Chinese yuan; USD is US dollars. Do not replace one with the other because both routes end at a Chinese bank.

Ask the supplier to confirm in writing whether it must receive the full invoice amount or whether bank deductions are acceptable. That answer determines the transfer instruction. If the supplier must receive CNY 100,000, the payment route and fee arrangement must preserve CNY 100,000 at the receiving end.

Keep the purchase order, contract and invoice together. OnLink's broader overseas supplier payment checklist covers approvals and supporting records that apply across destinations.

Turn a CNY quote into a KES budget

Use one multiplication:

KES before a separate fee = CNY invoice amount × KES charged per CNY

The relevant number for a Kenya-to-China payment is the provider's rate for selling CNY to you. A rate labelled for converting CNY back into KES answers the opposite question.

For the dated example:

CNY 100,000 × KES 19.42 per CNY = KES 1,942,000

A quote of KES 19.52 per CNY would produce KES 1,952,000 for the same invoice. The difference is KES 10,000 before fees. This sensitivity check scales cleanly: a CNY 250,000 order changes by KES 25,000 for each KES 0.10 rate difference.

The Central Bank of Kenya says its published exchange rate is a weighted average of registered interbank spot trades and that it does not set customer exchange rates. Use a market reference to understand direction, then use the provider's confirmed sell rate to budget the payment. OnLink's live KES-to-CNY page supplies current market context.

Verify the beneficiary before moving money

Copy the beneficiary details from payment instructions confirmed by the supplier. The record should identify the beneficiary's legal name, bank name, account number, receiving currency and any bank code requested by the payment provider.

Verify new or changed instructions through a contact method already used with the supplier. Do not use only the phone number or link inside the change request. A genuine-looking message is not independent confirmation.

Match the beneficiary name against the invoice and contract. Stop if the supplier asks for payment to an unrelated person or entity without a documented commercial reason and internal approval. Correct details matter more than speed: a completed transfer to the wrong account is not fixed by a clear invoice.

Compare the amount received, the rate and the fee

A transfer quote has three separate numbers: the CNY the supplier receives, the KES-per-CNY exchange rate and every explicit fee. Record all three on the same approval sheet.

If a fee is deducted from the sent amount, increase the payment only after the provider confirms how that fee is applied. If a fee is charged separately, add it to the KES budget without changing the CNY recipient amount.

For a supplier that invoices in USD instead, use the USD/KES conversion-cost method and keep the USD and CNY calculations separate. Comparing a CNY sell rate with a USD sell rate produces no useful answer until both are translated into the supplier's required receipt amount.

OnLink's Terms of Service state that the applicable fee and exchange rate appear before confirmation. Read the final screen against the approval sheet rather than relying on an earlier screenshot.

Reconcile the payment when it arrives

Save the transfer confirmation with the invoice and purchase order. Record the CNY sent, KES paid, exchange rate, fee, payment reference and approval date as separate fields.

Ask the supplier to confirm the amount credited, not only that a payment notification arrived. A short receipt closes the loop between the KES debit and the Chinese invoice. Any difference then has a named place to investigate: the exchange, the fee, the payment route or the receiving account.

For the next China payment, start with the confirmed CNY amount and calculate the KES budget using the live KES-to-CNY rate.
